"AT THE "RIVE DROITE" ....." Conciergerie Tip by eden_teuling

Conciergerie, Paris: 74 reviews and 173 photos

This building called THE CONCIERGERIE is part of LE PALAIS DE JUSTICE.

Its has its fa?ade and entrance at the QUAI DE L'HORLOGE.

The title "concierge" has lost its importance, but it used to be given to members of NOBLE FAMILIES.....

In the photographs: the little "book-shops" (just boxes with a lid), that are along the quais and where you can find little treasures especially when you can read FRENCH books.......
They also sell paintings, water-colours and other things but the speciality is: les bouquinistes!

Tourists come in droves to this place and not because of the beauty of the building but they want to see the building for its TRAGIC PAST.

The CONCIERGERIE was the WAITING ROOM for the GUILLOTINE : some 2500 human beings have been waiting here for the cart that would take them to the guillotine.......times haven't changed, we now only use other means & methods to punish people...

One of them was MARIE-ANTOINETTE (visitors can always visit her cel), Madame Elisabeth King LODEWIJK XVI 's sister, Madame du Barry, the last mistress of King Lodewijk XV, Phillipe-?galit? and Charlotte Corday, who killed the bloodthirsty MARAT...
They all were ARISTOCRATS, imagine....even women....

The CONCIERGERIE is (with the Sainte Chapelle) the only MEDIEVAL part of the Royal Palace.
I love visiting this palace for several more reasons: in the Salle de Garde (down stairs) you can still see a sign that shows how high the water came in 1910 when River Seine overflowed.........

The CUISINES are also impressive: a huge, monstrous kitchen with 4 huge chimneys in the 4 corners where EACH day the meals were prepared for some 2,000 - 3,000 persons during the time that the palace still was the palace for the ROYAL FAMILY......

Address: 2 Boulevard du Palais, 75001 Paris
Directions: Near Quai de l'Horloge.
