The Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem is one of the must see attractions you have to visit if you want to get some sort of educational perspective of this wonderous city. The museum is built within the Medieval halls and walls of the Citadel of David that overlook the Jaffa Gate. In each hall there are dioramas and multimedia presentations educating the visitor on the 3000 year old history of Jerusalem. The Citadel was actually begun by Herod the Great 2000 years ago although most of the walls you see today date from medieval times and later.
Of special interest is the Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000. This exhibition features the glass works of artist David Chihuly. This exhibit was not in the museum when I visited back in 1996 however it has been a major draw to the hitherto overlooked museum when it opened in 2000. I noticed that when I visited the museum that the entrance was difficult to find and unless you had a good guidebook you probably would not have realized that there was a museum in the Citadel at all. Thankfully I understand that this has changed since I visited and people will not miss out on visiting one of the more interesting historical museums that I have ever visited anywhere.
There are also plays and concerts performed inside the courtyard of the Citadel. I also recommend that you climb up to the top of the Tower of David, actually built by the Turks, iself and take in the view of the Old City of Jerusalem. They are remarkable.
Directions: Just inside the Jaffa Gate to your right. The Jaffa Gate is actually the Westernmost entrance into the Old City of Jerusalem.
