Newcastle is a 1 1/2 hour drive north of Sydney. It is worth a visit for the beautiful beaches, lovely heritage areas and more layed back atmosphere than Sydney. There are plenty of great walks including the Bathers Way walk and Newcastle East Heritage walk. If you are a keen hiker you might even like to tackle the Great North Walk which stretches between Sydney and Newcastle. For more information check out my Newcastle pages.
