Bombastic addition to the Hofburg Palace, construced during the twilight years of the Empire - too grandiose for its own good. This pile was completed only in 1913, only one year before the Empire plunged into the war which would terminate its existence. At least the chambers of Neue Burg have been put to good use - as reception rooms for the Austrian Presidency, and suitable stage-sets for some of the miscellaneous collections of the Kunsthistorische Museum. Somewhat fittingly, Adolf Hitler appeared on the balcony of Neue Burg in March 1938, as an enormous throng of Viennese gathered to heartily and enthusiastically welcome him as the liberator who they believed would restore their city to the glory it deserved. O tempera, O mores.
