The Hohensalzburg Fortress or castle is one of the most impressive castles in all of Europe. The castle sits high over the city on Salzburg on a rocky outcrop. It is almost impossible to look westward in the city without catching a view of it.
There are two ways up to the castle. One is to walk, which was my choice. The other is to take funicular which will cost you about 5.50 Euros.
The castle was begun back in 1077 however with furture expensions, it was not completed until 1681. The castle served as both a defensive fortress and for the residence of local prince-archbishops who ruled this region of Austria. They eventually moved down to the Residenz, in the middle of Salzburg.
There is an excellent tour of the castle rooms which will take you through various courtrooms, torture chambers and kitchens within the fortress. There are superb displays of medieval art, weaponry and torture instruments.
Also of note are the splendid views that can be seen from the castle ramparts. Looking south you can see a panorama of the Alps well below the walls are excellent vistas of Salzburg.
