  • Women in Forbidden City - Beijing

During the times of the Qing Dynasty thousands of women lived in the Imperial Palace. The Empress and the concubines lived a very lonely life. Many rituals ruled their daily life. They were very seldom allowed to see their relatives. If they were lucky the Emperor gave order to see them. But there were also many concubines, who never saw the Emperor in their whole life.

They spent their days playing cards and gossipping. As the politicians were afraid, that the concubines could get too much knowledge and power, they sometimes were not even allowed to learn how to read and write. Their only compagnions were other concubines or the eunuchs.

Specially for them were theatres and temples built in the Forbidden City.
