The Presidio military prison gave Ushuaia one of its prime reasons for its existence when the first prisoners arrived in 1896. Until the prison was closed in 1947, Argentinas most notorious political convicts spent time in the Presidio. The life and harsh living and work conditions of the prisoners is very well documented in the Presidio.

For me, this is a very fascinating place because of this double notion of being emprisoned in jail at the end of the world, where life in such an isolated city as is Ushuaia can already feel like a prison in itself.

The Presidio also hosts the Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia which illustrates the history artic explorations. This museum itself alone is worth a visit (see other must see activities).
