This ancient monastery, the oldest still in existance in the world, was founded in 330 AD by Helena, the mother of the byzantine emperor Constatine. She was impressed by the sacredness of this place where Moses saw the burning bush. The enrichment of the monastery by numerous ecclesiastic donations led to series of raids and murders by the nomadic tribes in the desert. So in 530 AD Emperor Justinian ordered the building of a fortress, with a new basilica and monastery as well the original chapel (dedicated to St Catharine, a martyr of Alexandria) as a safe home for the monks and pilgrims.
