built from 1730 to 1735 according to the designs of Gabriel, the father/son architectural team (also responsible for the Trianon and the opera of the chateau de Versailles, the Hotel Crillon, place de la Concorde and the Pont royal in Paris)
the building is a magnificient example of classic french style at its purest
the south pavilion , the only one open to the public is home to the musee national des douanes. Its collection recounts the evolution of one of the oldest customs institutions evoking the technical side of the necoiunters between smuggles and customs agents over the ages
