"The Oldest Market in the World" Viktualienmarkt Tip by Britta

Viktualienmarkt, Munich: 53 reviews and 96 photos

To go from Peterkirche to the Viktualienmarkt, face the from of the church, the go straight around the building, keep going straight, and when you hit an open space filled with tents and small buildings and people, you are in the V market. This is the oldest market in the world, having started in Marienplatz, but then was moved in 1807 to this location. Walk around, take it all in. Buy if you want. This is the greatest place to have lunch, but don't buy at the stands, look at all the butcher shops lining one of the streets that borders the market, and go in there and ask for a sandwich. It's a cheap way to eat, about $5 for a sandwich and a drink. If you want to sit, take your meal outside and sit on the curb. Next go to the Frauenkirche, which is on my next tip.
