"The River Spree" River Spree Tip by DrewV
River Spree, Berlin: 31 reviews and 43 photos
As far as rivers go, the Spree isn't among the world's greatest. It's not as majestic as the Thames, as mighty as the Mississippi, as sprightly as the Seine, or as enigmatic as the Vltava. Still, there's something about the barbed wire still lurking at the bottom of the dividing Spree that gives it a supernatural quality.
Since the Spree flowed from East Berlin to West Berlin, it was an attractive escape route. The Communists knew that and used barbed wire and patrol boats to keep Ossies from fleeing the "worker's paradise."
I have no idea whether the river's name is the origin for the English word "spree," meaning uncontrolled frenzy-like activity. It could be. I can't see how, but it could be.
