All joking aside, East Germany suffered a tremendous brain drain in the 1940’s and 50’s. All of its young, intelligent people were heading west through Berlin, so that all East Germany had left were the old and the stupid – not good for a country. That’s not entirely true, but it was close enough that East German authorities did the unthinkable. They built a Wall, not to keep the West out, but to keep the East in.

That's why a picture like this (which I found on the web and is just about the only picture in my pages not taken by me or my friends or family -- cheers to whoever took this) -- Anyway, that's why a picture like this can show so much graffiti. The western side of the Wall was just that, a side of a wall. The West German authorities did not acknowledge the Wall and did not care what people did to it on their side. It was here in front of the Brandenburg Gate that Reagan advised his Soviet counterpart: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" And so he did...
