  Bebelplatz in winter

Bebelplatz, Friedrich II?s gift to learning and the arts, was the site of the great Nazi book-burning. On the main page, I showed you the empty bookshelves. This is the square itself, facing Humboldt University. The books chosen in the burning include anything written by Jews, Communists, or gays, or any books sympathizing with them. Really, though, it was more along the lines of mass chaos, and any book could have been snatched from the shelves and hurled into the blaze.
