Carnvial kicks off in Arrecife at the covered marques at the Recinto, near the beach. It starts with the noisy elections of the Carnival Queen, Gay Carnival Queen, and voting of the floats. Pop-up bars, food and music is all around. Next is the hilarity of the solemn procession of the Burning of the Sardine, also in Arrecife.

The Carnival parade always starts in Arrecife and lasts usually from 6pm until midnight with all sorts of fun activities revolving around the parade. In subesequent days it moves to Puerto del Carmen, Teguise, Costa Teguise, Yaiza and Playa Blanca on dates between February and March.

Each area celebrates in its own unique way, it is all very colourful, and noisy. Join in, dress up, or at least bring the camera !

You need to find out the dates & places of the various carnival processions, that generally take place in the 4 main resorts during February & March. But some inland villages also have their own carnival with week long activities leading up to a procession.

I was there in February quite a few years ago but knew nothing of this. Is it a new event?
