"Soviet War Memorial" Vienna Favorite Tip by yooperprof

Favorite thing: The Soviet Army occupied Vienna in April 1945, chasing out remaining Nazi forces after spirited skirmishes. As with Germany and Berlin, Austria as a country and Vienna as its capital city was divided into four zones of occupation, among "the Big Four" (the US, the USSR, the UK, and France). The Soviets however were clearly the senior partner, as this imposing War Memorial testifies. It celebrates the role of the individual Soviet soldier in "liberating" Austria from the Nazi yoke. As propaganda, it didn't really work: there was never a great deal of affection between the Viennese and their Soviet "liberators".
Fondest memory: The Soviet War Memorial overlooks Schwarzenbergplatz.
