"The Holocaust Memorial in Judenplatz" Bezirk / 1st District Tip by yooperprof

Favorite thing: Contemporary British scultpor Rachel Whiteread designed the Holocaust Memorial. It's in the form of a bleak concrete library, sealed-up and silent. The Memorial consciously conflicts with the buildings around it; it makes no concessions. Around the base of the Memorial are inscribed the names of major concentration and extermination camps of the Third Reich, with the number s of victims at each camp. (A greater percentage of Austrians joined the Nazi Party than Germans; a disproportionate number of the camps were headed by Austrian members of the S.S.) Before World War II, Jews represented almost 10% of Vienna' s population, or 170,000; by the summer of 1945 fewer than 400 were left.
Address: The old part of Vienna inside the Ringstrasse
