By plane if you live anywhere beyond the Golden Horseshoe.
From the airport the flat rate cabs are a good deal. As are the coaches into the city - right to downtown or to Yorkdale and Islington subway stations (Islington is the cheapest).
By foot - weather permitting. For a city this large our public transport is inadequate - only two subway/underground/metro lines along with bus routes and cool-looking, but infrequent and late, streetcars (we do not call them 'trams').
