  s'Gravensteen, looming over the city
by DrewV

A few blocks north of the three towers stands the castle of the Counts of Flanders. Begun in the 10th century and finished in the 12th, s'Gravensteen haunts the city with its bleak stone bulk looming over canals and streets.

The castle was one of the least known monuments in Europe for many years before restoration brought it back to its former prominence. Now the palace-cum-fortress makes for an impressive stroll through the histroy of the Counts of Flanders, one of Europe's great medieval houses.
