"The Graben street" Graben Street - Shops - Architecture Tip by marinas

  The Graben street
by marinas

The Graben, in the heart of the city, is one of Vienna?s most distinguished business streets, located next to
the Kohlmarkt and the KarntnerstraBe. In the center of the Graben stands the Pestsaule (Plague Pillar), made
in 1687 by Bernhard Fischer van Erlach. Leopold I had this pillar erected in memory of the devastation of the
plague, which ended in 1679. Both fountains on either side of the Plague Pillar were constructed by Johann
Martin Fischer in 1804. On the corner of the Graben and the KarntnerstraBe is located the "stock im Eisen"
(Stick in the Iron). This is a tree trunk full of hundred of nails, which was supposedly crafted as a
masterpiece by a locksmith with the aid of the devil. The name "graben" ("moat") comes from the fortress moat
which was located on this site from Roman times until the mid 12th century.
