Now, there are many more caves in Valkenburg aan de Geul. Five, to be exact, among which the "gemeentegrot" (municipal cave), the aquarium-cave and the "catacomben" (a copy of the famous ones in Rome). Most popular, and also recommended by me in combination with the ruins of Valkenburg-castle, is the "Fluwelen grot" (Velvet Cave). In the tunnels here, are various "charcoal"-drawings that give an extra dimension to the tunnels underground. The walls have been blackened and after that the artists carved out the image ... a technique that amazes when you stand eye to eye with it.
