"St Martin's Cathedral" Top 5 Page for this destination St Martin's Cathedral - Dom Sv Martina Tip by Skipka

Every French town has its Notre Dame, its proud and so we do. :) St. Martin's Cathedral should be named like this. This biggest, oldest and most spectacular church. It was built in eed to move the provost's church dedicated to the Most Holy Saviour from the castle into the settlement below. The oldest act says that this Church institution possessed archives, a library and a deposit room where valuable liturgical objects were kept. The oldest seal of the Pressburg provostship is from 1288. However, there are just fragments saved from this church and theuy were collected and put into maisonry of the pointed window next to the southern anteroom.
In time when Bratislava became a free royal town, there were some political struggles among ecclestical and secular powers but the church itself always had been autonomous place. The reconstruction carried out since 14th ct under the patronage of the ruler and the town council created a new "outfit" in the Gothic style. There are several similar gothic churches in Vienna whose constructers also worked here on this church but elements influencing the development of Central European architecture such as segmented arches in the tower appeared for the first time in this building. The author of the three aisled hall is Hans Puschpaum.
The church was ceremoniously consecrated in 1452.
