It was built in 1837-1840 by order of Knez Milos Obrenovicin the vicinity of the Belgrade fortress, which was at the time occupied by Turks. In the churchyard were buried Vuk Karadzic and Dositej Obradovic and in the crypt Dukes Milos and Mihailo. In front of the altar are preserved the relics of Saint Emperor Uros and Saint Despot Stefan Stiljanovic
. It is built in style of classicism with late baroque elements. The church is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. The interior is richly decorated.
