"Ayasofya" Hagia Sophia - Ayia Sofia - Ayasofya Tip by elcolibri

The Hagia Sophia means "Divine Wisdom." Ayasofya, the largest church in Istanbul, is said to have been built by Constantine in 325 on the foundations of a pagan temple. In 1453 it became a mosque with minarets, and a great chandelier was added. In 1935 it was converted into a museum. Many art historians acclaim the dome (105 feet in diameter) of Hagia Sophia to be the most beautiful in the world. It is considered to be one of the greatest buildings of the world, and one of the candidates for the competition of the New Seven Wonders of the World, organized by UNESCO at August 2000.
