Votivkirche - Votive Church, Vienna: 42 reviews and 90 photos

I like this church which graces the skyline along the ring.

My favourite thing about church is its windows which are quite modern and some depict scenes from World War II

Apparently there is also a famous candle die "Barbara-Kerze" from 1930. It is 264 kg, 4 m high with a diameter of 30 cm . It should be able to burn for 100 years!!

HISTORY: This church was designed by architect H. von Ferstel and after 23 years of slow building work was finished in 1879 and was dedicated on the Emperor's silver wedding anniversary. It was built to commemorate the failed attempt on Kaiser Franz Joseph in 1853. More than 300,000 people gave donations to build the church even from places such as Egypt and Syria!!

Originally its location was planned to be near the Belvedere but eventually its current location was decided in 1855. The church should have been decorated in Westminster Abbey style but when the church ended up being built near the garrison, the army had other ideas.

Address: The old part of Vienna inside the Ringstrasse
Directions: Between Universitätsstraße & Währinger Straße
