The Tower of London as seen from the Thames River

As a child, whenever my Anglophile parents sent me to my room, they said they were sending me to the Bloody Tower to contemplate my crimes.

Fortunately I was never beheaded.

So of course I absolutely had to go to the Tower when I finally got to London, and see the Bloody Tower of which my mother spoke so fondly.

We were able to get tickets to the Key Ceremony, which takes place in the evenings after the Tower is closed to the general public. The Yoeman Warders have been performing the ritual of locking the Tower gates for the night for over 700 years.
Being in the Tower at night with so few people during a solemn ceremony (absolutely no talking!) enhanced the experience a hundredfold. I felt as if I was watching the Beefeaters from centuries past. History was coming alive before my very eyes.

You will need to request tickets via post prior to your visit. The address is on the Tower website.
