"Athlone" Athlone Tip by orlikins

Athlone, Ireland: 2 reviews and 2 photos

Athlone is on the Shannon river, between the county borders of Westmeath and Roscommon, halfway between Dublin and Galway.

I always had this image of Athlone as being some of kind of backwater dump, but it's actually quite a smart place - considering... :)

In terms of touristy things to do, there isnt much in the town, apart from Athlone Castle and riverside walks. However it's a good place to base yourself if you want to explore the Midlands and the West.

County Westmeath is not of Ireland's top tourist attractions but its infrastructure has drastically improved over the past few years, making easy for commuters to get to and from Dublin - yep it's a long haul!

On the Roscommon side of Athlone, you can follow the yellow tourist "South Roscommon drive" routes, which lead off the N6 to Galway. These routes will bring you to around Shannonbridge (not much there apart from the bridge & the river and some bog works) and the main attraction - Clonmacnoise.
