The Rocks is definitely an area that you should check out. This is one of the oldest areas in Sydney; the buildings are some of the oldest you'll find in the city and they are beautiful. Many areas of The Rocks have been renovated, and now it's a big shopping and restaurant area. There are a lot of touristy and artsy shops here. Prices, for the most part, are on the high side, but not as bad as you'd expect. There are some great bargains if you look around. About 1 block off the main road that runs along the water, there's the amazing take-away place that has Greek food - it has some of the best souvlaki and gyros that I've ever had.

It's worth taking a walking tour of The Rocks if you are going to go. Stop into the tourist center (the big white building on the main street); they sell pamphlets so you can take a self-guided tour, and they also run tours led by volunteers/historians. I took the guided tour; it lasted about 1.5 hours and the cost was very reasonable. I recommend this! I learned so much about Sydney and Australian history and also got much more info about the buildings and the area. My guide was a woman who had just finished her MA in history. She was so informative and enthusiastic!

On weekends and at festival times, there is usually free entertainment, with outdoor concerts and street theatre. Many of The Rocks' pubs offer live music - jazz, folk and pop. The Rocks Market operates every weekend, from 10am to 5pm each day, and until 6pm in summer months. Some 100 stalls are set up under a series of sail-like canopies, filling the lower end of George Street.

Address: The Rocks
Directions: Look for the old buildings made out of rocks (go figure!) to the west of the Harbour Bridge.
