I n the center of the square today stands the Egyptian obelisk from the temple of Luxor,donated to Louis Philippe in 1831 by Mehmet-ali Erected in 1836 .it is 23 m high and coverd with hieroglyphics which illustrate the glorious deeds of the pharaoh Ramses II.Eight statues symboliiing the main cities of France,stand at the corners of the square.
