"A great place to watch the sunset" Kiyomizu Temple Tip by kooka3

Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto: 76 reviews and 158 photos

I strongly recommend checking out this place! Regardless of your religious beliefs (or lack of beliefs), I think this is an amazingly peaceful and spiritual place if you open yourself up to it.

The temple is over 1000 years old. Many parts have obviously been rebuilt, fixed, updated, whatever -- but standing in a place that has been used for a millenium is awe-inpiring, and rare for people coming from the "New World" where old usually means it was built a couple hundred years ago.

Make sure you check out the sacred springs which are supposed to have healing powers. The name of the temple means "pure water."

Take some time to get a birds-eye-view of the city.

Also, make sure you wander over all the grounds - there are little temples tucked into out of the way spots.

Directions: Take bus 206 or 207 to the bottom of the hill, and keep walking UP. Takes about 10 minutes to walk if you don't stop to check out all the shops - which is worth doing, too.
