  Big Buddha of Kamakura

Favorite thing: The Great Buddha is a huge bronze statue located at the Kotoku-in Temple in Kamakura. It is 40 feet high and weighs 20 tons. It was cast by the sculptors Ono-Goroemon and Tanji-Hisatomo as a symbol of the Buddhist religion. In 1498, a tidal wave destroyed the temple which housed the Buddha leaving only the foundation stones and the Buddha intact. In 1960 the neck was reinforced and the body was made to move freely on its base in order to avoid damage in the event of an earthquake.
