Founded by the Cardeal Infante D. Henrique in 1559, it housed the professors and other personages of cultural and religious renown in the Portuguese World: St. Francisco de Borja, St. Joao de Brito, pedro de Fonseca, Mauel Alvares, Luis de Molina, Francisco Suarez and prelates of numerous dioceses troughout the Portuguese Empire, including D.Afonso Mendes, Patriarch of Abyssinia, and D. Pedro Martins, first bishop of Japan. The most noteworthy areas include the Renaissance cloister and the Sala dos Actos (Official meeting room); The Holy Spirit Temple, of Manneirist style inspired in the Church of Jesus in Rome, by the architect Da Vignola, who sent its design trough Jesuit missionaries to the portuguese territories in India and Brazil.
On the picture you have one of the lateral corridors of the cloister. Now its being used with classrooms. Classroms are full with very beautiful old tiles. You can go and visit them.
