Well actually the Ferry Boat lands on Kodiak Island but you can watch the Ferry Boat come through the channel from the bridge that connects the two. It is a short walk to Near Island or you can easily drive. You could spend the day wandering around Near Island if you went to all of the sites.
The Ferry comes from either Homer or Seward several times per week. There are State Rooms available or you can camp in the Solarium. You would need a sleeping bag for that. If you are just walking on to the ship there shouldn't be much problem with a reservation but if you want to bring a vehicle in the summer months advanced reservations are hight recommended!! The ride is about 12-13 hours depending on weather.
