The trail was originally used by Indians in their hunting and raiding. After settlers arrived, they called the route the Texas Road. The first drovers then renamed the route several times to the ‘cattle trail’, the Sedalia Trail and the Kansas Trail and it is uncertain why it over time became known as the Shawnee Trail.
