A visit to Okinawa is a must for serious practicioners of Karate who want to go back to the roots.

Karate was developed in Okinawa, (some say as a mix between Ryukyuan and Kenpo). It was given the name karate after introduction to Japan, meaning "empty hand."

People come from all over the world to train and participate in international competitions.

I stumbled upon a "fight night" of sorts where anyone could sign up to fight in the ring. There were a lot of mixed styles, locals, and military participants. I didn't see any women other than one holding a sign indicating the round.
