"White water rafting" Queenstown Tip by iandsmith

  Ride on the wild side

This is a very common activity in N.Z., along with jet boating. In Queenstown there are two main companies and I have done both. The one shown here is for those who want a bit of a thrill but don't want to drown. Scenic, generally relaxed and enjoyable. Our guide also was a poet and kept us entertained in the quiet stretches.
The Shotover is the adrenalin one where you have to take a chopper just to get to the start point and there are more higher grade rapids en route.
The Kawarau ride only has one grade 4, the Chinese Dog Leg, which is what the accompanying photo shows. The only person who fell out was our guide and he did that on the grade three rapid immediately before.
Conveniently he rejoined us because, after the Chinese is a rapid that nobody rides down, a beyond 5 horror that borders on suicide, and you have to beach your raft before that.
