  Antwerp, city at the river
by irisbe

Antwerp, capital city of the Province who bears the same name.
In Flemish it is Antwerpen, in French it is Anvers. It might be confusion when you travel through Belgium and you see those different spellings. A lot of people won't know it is the same city.
Antwerp grew along the bend in the river Schelde. Already from 300 to 400 the first settlements started.
The city originally started to grow around the place where you can find the Stone (stone castle). Throughout the ages Antwerp's prosperity was due to the river Schelde.
There is a saying: We thank the river to God, but we thank Antwerp to the river.
No doubt that in the years the river got blocked off by the Dutch and later on even the English caused problems (when Napoleon occupied us and planned an invasion on England from Antwerp), the city was economically hurt tremendeously.
At the end of the19th century, after new treaties, the last blockade by the Dutch was taken away and the harbour could florish again, and so did the city.
Antwerp has lots to offer. Bearing a rich history and cultural history, you can enjoy the architecture of paintings of the golden ages.
Nowadays Antwerp is one of the most vivid and livingly cities on earth (cfr Newsweek we are in the top 5). We thank this partly to our famous fashion designers and to our local musicians who are getting world known (dEUS and especially Tom Barman).
I should not add names here infact, as I will not be able to add all those names of the people who are putting Antwerp on this world map and it is too bad to miss some!

Don't be a blind minded ant moving on that touristic ant's path from Amsterdam to Paris and from Paris to Amsterdam, but open your eyes, take the "risk" and leave the path that has been followed by every average tourist because it is said so in the books to do it this way. Do it your way! Drop by!
You won't regret!
