Watergate, Porter's Lane (Mark Jochim 5/26/03)
by MarkJochim

In the park to the north of Porter's Lane is Canute's House, a Norman merchant's house built in the 12th century with a warehouse on the ground floor. Later, merchants' houses were built of wood with stone vaults for storage underneath. You can see the remains of several vaults in this area.

At the corner of Porter's Lane with the High Street lies the remains of Watergate (in the photo). Built about 1300, this south gate of the medieval town was the main gateway from the sea, where tolls and taxes were collected on imported goods.
