  The Bargate (Mark Jochim 5/26/03)
by MarkJochim

The Bargate was the main gateway into medieval Southampton. In 1190 it was just a small tower with a round archway, which you can still see. Over the next 300 years, towers were built on either side, battlements were added and a hall was built on the first floor.
