Favorite thing: Facadisme is a trend that involves keeping facades of those pieces of jewelry and completely reshuffling interior design, materials and configuration. The aim was to make them fit to our contemporary way of living.

The idea came from a good initiative to save historical buildings, rather than tear everything down and completely forget about the past. The trend had spread through Europe for years.

But, in European cities, voices were raised on that not every "old" buildings were saved. One of issues was then on the definition of buildings that were "worth preserving".

According to those con's, by doing this, facadisme pro's would even disturb order since they would keep a multi-centennial building but without any context of the past since most of surrounding houses and other landmarks will disappear. Thus, the preserved building will keep its facade but none would ever know about genuine atmosphere, uses and customs in the quarter...

Other con's also: while completely reshuffling interior design, material and configuration, one is said to extract the soul of a building.

Thus, some con's would be in favour of tearing down everything in order to build new ones...

In addition to that, restoring and preserving cost a lot so authorities may be tempted to demolish and build...

So, you see, facadisme seems not to be the miracle solution. However, many buildings in Antwerp are preserved this way.

Personnally, I like seeing those houses of another epoch. Another solution maybe preserving a whole area around "interesting", "representative" buildings. This way, it would be a real trip back in murky depth of times... BUT, one has to find money for that...

Fondest memory: Preserved buildings... though many attempt to get rid off the past.

See my travelogue on Facadisme as well.
