  Wijnendaele castle

From the first crusade until the Second World War this fortress has been involved in important historical events: two hundred years counts of Flanders, hundred years counts of "van Namen", the century of Burgundy, two hundred years of "van Kleef", 165 years of "Pfalts" and more than 165 years of the family Matthieu. Today the domain accommodates two museums : the castle museum and the museum of cheese called "'t Bourgondisch Caeshuys". The family Matthieu still lives in the tranquillity of the forestry of Wynendale.

Church of St.-Peter
In the church of St.-Peter, with her remarkable glass-windows, we can also detect a painting by Antoon van Dyck: "The death of the martyr St.-Sebastian".
Remarkable are the relics of the two "Torhout" saints : the child "Achas", who lived in "de Zwaan" nowadays restaurant-tea-room on the corner of the street called "Oostendestraat" and situated in the shadow of the church tower; the second is the Flemish count Charles le Bon, successor of count Hapkin, who spend a lot of time in the castle of Wynendale.
