  The Old railway tracks
by sim1

There is a long stretch of hiking trail that follows the old railway tracks. It's really amazing to think of this area and realize this was the busiest railroad in Canada during the First World War. Every 20 minutes there were trains chugging through here with logs or grain, wow, how quickly things can change. The last train to be seen here was in 1959. It's so quiet and peaceful now, I just can't imagine all those train going through here, such a 'relatively short' time ago.
Now there is not much that makes you think back of that time, besides the very smooth hiking trail. It's wonderful to see that nature is claiming back this beautiful area, so much has been lost already. It has actually become a favourite travel route for wildlife. If you keep your eyes open you can see tracks of moose, bear, wolf, beaver and deer.

Directions: Mizzie Lake Trail at 15.4 kilometers from the West Gate of Algonquin Park
