"I spent over two years in..." Russia Favorite Tip by walkingskin

Favorite thing: I spent over two years in Russia, mostly working as a free-lance interpreter. I've been to many areas of the Republic: Moscow to Vladivostok, Novosibirsk to Naryan-Mar. It's a huge country. The people tend to be dreary fatalists who nonetheless know how to party. Russia's a bad choice for travel if you have alcoholic tendencies: seriously, your disease will erupt there until you're either dead, in treatment, or - worst of all - just like a Russian (i.e. in a hopeless, eternally-damned situation with no way out). If that country ever sobered up, it might just become rational and able to govern itself. That likelihood is very small. Still, it can be fun, friendships are passionate, and you won't find white folk more ready to dance anywhere else.

Fondest memory: Saunas; swimming in the Ob River; reviving myself on jarred, pickled vegetables in March (the traditional month of starvation); great sex with 'total' women; getting sunburned in Siberia; the many intricate conversations with well-educated folk over dinners in their most hospitable homes; feeding off of the great spirits of humans who can suffer all with a smile.
