The abbey of Averbode was built in Demergotic style. The structural work of the church dates from the 14th century and was made from iron sandstone from the area. The wall nearby the entrance the abbey mentions the year 1651. This is not the year the abbey was built but the year it was renovated.

In the abbey we still find the bakery of the monastery and the forgery; There is also a joinery workshop, beautifully decorated with white stone arches. You will also find a wash-house in the abbey. The wash-house has been in use since 1623 and still is.

The inner court is dominated by the mighty tower in real baroque style. The spacious and rich interior of the abbey is now used as a museum. Some painting of Flemish painters (1600-1700) can be admired in the abbey. The abbey also owns some art treasures, such as a beautiful collection of broidery from Lier, a 14th century relic-cross, fine monstrances?.

The abbey is situated on the verge of three provinces: Brabant, Antwerp and Limburg. The abbey of Averbode is a Norbertine abbey. A the moment some fifty Norbertines still live and work in the abbey. The abbey is located in woody surroundings and is the point of departure and arrival of several beautiful walks.
