"Dougga" Tunisia Things to Do Tip by iwent

Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

It's blazingly hot. The sun beats down. I sit in the top row of the amphitheatre, below me as far as the eye can reach, a vast panorama of hills, in sweltering heat.

I leave the amphitheatre for what it is, skip the temples, forum and capitol. I head for the residential area, narrow alleyways, large houses crammed in the available space.

From here it is not difficult to find the red light district. It is sign-posted; stones with a relief of a phallus show the way to the brothel.

Unmarried men entered through a large door into a wide courtyard surrounded by rooms. Married men, more discretely, entered through smaller doors, less conspicuous.

How to get there:

From Tunis:
head for Teboursouk from where it is a 6-km walk along a scenic road. If you don't fancy walking charter a taxi. Terboursouk is an attractive farming town with a Thursday souk.

From El Kef:
head for Nouvelle Dougga from where it is a 3-km walk along a dirt track. There are louages from Teboursouk to Nouvelle Dougga. You may persuade the driver to make a detour via the ruins. Use your haggling skills!
