"Visit San Giorgio" San Giorgio Maggiore - Church and Island Tip by ChrsStrl

  Look down on the cloisters
by ChrsStrl

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore is one vaporetto stop from San Zaccaria. The church of the same name is one of the most conspicuous in the city. Its bell tower echoes that of St Mark's.

Built by Palladio in the 16thC but he did not live to see iots completion - which was left to Sorella in the 17th. The facade is modelled on a temple portico with four giant columns.

You can take a lift up the befry for 3 Euros to gain fine views over Venice with much shorter queues than at the Campanile in St Mark's Sq.!
