Mandalay is - besides the 2nd largest city - known as the cultural capital of Myanmar.

I stayed here only 2 nights / 1 day and took it fairly easy as it was tremendously hot. What I did was hiring a trishaw for the day & evening (ca. 1500 kyat = $1,5/day).

In the afternoon, I climbed up the 1729 stairs of lively Mandalay Hill (240m), that has numerous levels with zillions of shrines, pagodas, images, souvenir stalls and astrologers. From the top of the hill enjoy the magnificent panoramas over the city and it’s environments! Try to be here at sunset time. Besides using the stairs, one could also drive up the road and use an escalator to the top.

The early evening time was spent at the unsurpassable Marie-Min Restaurant, where I can still remember the fantastic and fresh strawberry lassies.

After which we went to the show of the hilarious Moustache Brothers. This is a so called Ah Nyeint group, a theatre style that mixes dance, music, drama and jokes on actual events and politics. Because of their jokes, 2 members have been imprisoned for over 5 years, and released mid 2001. Since then they are only allowed to perform in their living room at 39th Street for tourists. You should meet these guys!

I missed quite a lot in and around Mandalay, but there are some excellent other VT pages on Mandalay!
