  The Gold Reef City
by musti72

Gold Reef City is a rebuilt frontier town in Johannesburg, complete with saloon, post office, and a real bank. There is also a narrow gauge railroad, a few rides and lots of craft shops. In a sense it is a bit like DisneyLand. There are demonstrations of pouring gold bars and you can go down a real gold mine which is an experience that may not appeal to the timid and claustrophobic. It goes 500 m into the ground and the shaft continues on for about five times that depth, although visitors are no allowed further. Back on the surface you can visit old pubs and mining stores, and attend a Mine Dance which is quite marvellous, with foot-stomping rhythms, colourful costumes and vibrant music.
