  Mudnovsky geothermal field, Kamchatka

This was quite a site! The russians were building a geothermal station to use the geothermal energy to make electricity. The project started in 1978. In 1995, they had a few turbines already going strong. I do not know how the project is going now in 2003.

The main impression of the site was of total desolation and slaughter of a huge area. The russians had trashed several square miles (without counting the surroundings of the road from Petropavlovsk) of beautiful land and left there to rust the carcasses of inumerable machines, trucks and delapidated buildings. Very haunting scene!

Directions: Northern slope and foot of Mudnovsky volcano, 75 km Southwest of Petropavlovsk.
