Daily begging for food in Nyaung U

The laid back village of Nyaung U is the common base for exploring the Bagan Region.

The major highlight within the village premises is the golden Shwezigon Paya and its Buddhist complexes, which is the liveliest of the Bagan region. Looks like the smaller brother of the Shwedagon in Yangon.

I found Nyaung U a pleasant, despite extremely hot, place after all. Good food, relaxed atmosphere (no hassles) and local life seems to continue as were there hardly any tourists.

As we entered the village, the busdriver stopped at the Large Golden Pot Guesthouse, obviously to make some commission. Theres lots of choices in the village, but the deal was very good, and they offered great service, such as breakfast at 5.30am, so that you can eat a bit before setting off for sunrise! As quite a bit of tourists stay here, it is usually no problem to find others if you want to share a minibus for a daytrip to ,say - Mt. Popa.

To get to Old Bagan from Nyaung U, calculate about 30 minutes bicycle ride.

There are daily buses to Mandalay, Yangon (overnight) and Inle Lake.
Besides buses, you may use a plane or the boat, which is fast respectively romantic, but remember that these are government run so that the profits on these extraordinarily expensive tickets goes to the "bad guys"!

My Bagan tips are under "general tips"
