  Mudnovsky volcano, Kamchatka

Mudnovsky is another active volcano of Kamchatka: 16 explosions since 1848, the last one in March 2000! So the pictures you see on this website show you the state of the volcano in 1995 before the last eruption.

Hiking up to the top of Mudnovsky is a fantastic experience. It takes 4 to 5 hours to get to the top, 2-3 hours to get down. There are not really trails, so follow your guide closely. You cross haunting landscape of rock, glaciers and snow. On top you pass next to fumerolles (careful, very hot, around 100 ºC, but up to 320 ºC!!) and bright yellow sulfur deposits. It smells of rotten eggs (SO2 gas vapors)... At the end of the hike, you may climb up to the rims of one of the active craters. Finally the view going down is breathtaking.
